Skiing in France

Ski resorts in France, like the ski terrain, are massively varied, meaning there is something to cater for every possible taste. Many of the larger ski resorts are purpose-built, so they are superbly located, with extensive and well-maintained ski areas, at altitudes that guarantee reliable snow conditions, and with many properties fantastically positioned to offer easy access to the slopes. One downside to this kind of resort can be the slightly unattractive architecture where concrete apartment blocks, hastily constructed in the boom of the 60s and 70s, contrast against the magnificent beauty of their alpine setting. However, the fantastic skiing in France means such resorts are some of the best in the world.

That said, for every purpose-built ski resort in France, there are many smaller and more traditionally styled villages with good access to exceptional skiing. Although proximity to lifts may not be as good as in the purpose-built resorts, the tranquillity offered by a ski holiday in an authentic French mountain village can be well worth the extra effort.

Many ski resorts in France are part of ski areas and this means that you can get access to a huge amount of skiable terrain during your holiday. You'll lift pass will usually allow for full access between this connected areas, though local lift passes are available if you're new to the slopes.

Chamonix

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc or simply Chamonix, is located at 1035m above sea level, at the foot of the majestic Mt Blanc in the Chamonix Valley. Far from a samey purpose-built resort, it's actually comprised of several villages and hamlets; some such as Argentière and Les Houches are well known in their own right as ski destinations. As the host of the first Winter Olympics in 1924, Chamonix is steeped in winter sports history and to this day remains the capital of ski-mountaineering and a true bucket-list resort thanks to it's challenging terrain, iconic peaks such as the Aguille du Midi and an après atmosphere that is second to none.

Courchevel

(3 Valleys) Often known as the ‘chic’ resort of the Trois Vallées, Courchevel is an outstanding ski resort comprising four different villages. Courchevel 1850 (now known simply as Courchevel) is smart, sophisticated and expensive, with excellent restaurants, shops and bars. Courchevel Moriond (formerly known as Courchevel 1650) is quieter, with an old village centre, lively bars and quietly situated chalets. Courchevel Village (formerly known as Courchevel 1550) and Le Praz are also much quieter villages than 1850 (now known as Courchevel), with a handful of quaint bars and restaurants.

Flaine

(Grand Massif) Situated at the foot of one of the largest linked ski areas in France, the Grand Massif, Flaine is a purpose built resort ideal for designed for convenience and a great choice for a short ski break.

La Plagne

(Paradiski) The resort of La Plagne is split into ten stations, which gives the opportunity to ski a number of quaint, French villages in a huge ski area. Our chalets are all based in the four main areas of Belle Plagne, Plagne Centre, Plagne 1800 and Plagne Village.. Whilst the main commercial centre is in Plagne Centre, there are supermarkets and ski hire shops in the other villages. All areas are linked by a free bus service.

La Rosiere

La Rosiere enjoys a high, sunny location in the Tarentaise Valley with great views of Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa. The resort has been built in a traditional chalet style along the road which leads from Bourg St. Maurice to the Petit-St-Bernard pass. The Espace San Bernardo ski area includes La Thuile in Italy, giving you the chance to pop over the border for a real Italian pizza for lunch!

Les Arcs

(Paradiski) Les Arcs consists of four modern purpose-built resorts at 1600, 1800, 1950 and 2000 metres. The resorts are spread out and accommodation is generally well placed to access the skiing. Arc 1800 is the largest village with a lively atmosphere, whilst Arc 2000 is extremely convenient to access the skiing and at 2000 metres, snow-sure. Arc 1950, the most recent addition to Les Arcs, is more rustic in style, with each building designed to have views of either a valley or a peak.

Les Carroz

(Grand Massif) Les Carroz enjoys a serene location in the Grand Massif area, and is most popular with French families. Skiing in the Grand Massif includes not only Les Carroz itself, but also the neighbouring resorts of Flaine, Samoens, Morillon and Sixt, giving access to 265 km of pistes. The village of Les Carroz features traditional Savoyard style timber buildings and pine-tree-clad surrounding slopes, at a height of 1200 metres. It is also one of the closest ski resorts to Geneva for those looking for a quick transfer of around 1 hour and a half.

Les Deux Alpes

Spread out along the valley in this historic and charming village, the lifts are every few hundred yards, so you are never far away from one. Ski slopes run down both sides of the resort, which sits in a high altitude valley joining the 'two alps' of Venosc and Mont de Lans. The resort is ideal for non-skiers, as it gives access to both the glacier and Venosc by gondola. A funicular passes through the ice to La Meije glacier (3570 metres) there are breathtaking views and superb snow conditions.

Les Menuires

Les Menuires offers a fantastic base for a week exploring the world’s largest ski area, the 600 kms of skiable runs in the Three Valleys. With a foundation of purpose built accommodation, more recent developments have led to more picturesque and traditional mountain architecture in the 8 villages of Les Menuires.

Meribel

(3 Valleys) The middle resort of le Trois Vallées, Méribel retains its traditional charm with attractive wooden chalet-style buildings. Shops, bars and restaurants are plentiful and lively. Mottaret (approximately 3km above Méribel Centre) is smaller and purpose-built with excellent access to the slopes. Down the hill from Méribel Centre is the tiny village of Nantgerel and further on to Méribel Village, the ‘original’ village. Both are linked into the lift system of the Trois Vallées.

Montgenevre

(Milky Way) A French ski resort situated 2km from the Italian border and connected with one of the most vast ski areas in Italy - The Milky Way ski circuit - offering 400km of runs and incorporating the well known resorts of Sauze d'Oulx and Sestriere.

Samoens

(Grand Massif) Samoëns is a picturesque village in France and part of the Grand Massif ski area. Offering a great variety of runs to suit different levels, this resort would be a great option for your next winter holiday.

Serre Chevalier

Serre Chevalier is located in the alpes close to the French-Italian boarder. The valleys consists of 4 villages - Briançon, St Chaffrey Chantemerle, Le Salle les Alpes Villeneuve and Le Monêtier les Bains. The most famous of the villages is Briançon with it's historic fortified walls and architecture which date back 300 years.

Tignes

(Tignes-Val d'Isere) One of the largest and most convenient of the purpose-built resorts, Tignes’ high altitude and excellent snow record of Tignes make it an ideal location for skiing and boarding fanatics the world over. There are three high-altitude villages in Tignes: Le Lavachet, Le Lac and Val Claret, all linked by free buses 24 hours a day, giving easy access to the skiing. The combined lift systems of Tignes and Val d’Isère (the famous Espace Killy - 300km of marked runs) have long been recognised as offering some of the very best skiing and boarding in the world.

Val d'Isere

(Tignes-Val d'Isere) Val d’Isère is one of the most popular resorts in the French Alps and has managed to retain its beautiful traditional village feel. Elegant and cosmopolitan, with its origins in medieval hunting estates, Val d’Isère has an array of shops, bars, clubs and restaurants to suit all tastes. The nightlife in Val d’Isère is outstanding and renowned all over the Alps, attracting many celebrities from all over the world.

Val Thorens

Not just the highest resort of the 2 Valleys but the highest resort in Europe (2300 metres), Val Thorens is modern, purpose-built, snow-sure and surrounded by spectacular peaks and glaciers. There are several commercial centres with plenty of bars and restaurants and a sunny main square almost on the piste. The snow stays at resort level throughout its very long season and access to the skiing is extremely easy from anywhere in the resort.

Valloire

Valloire is a pretty and authentic resort in the French Alps and in the Maurienne valley. The resort contains historical treasures including 17 chapels, as well as the Valloire Church which dates back to 1630 and has a beautiful interior. The resort is suited well to beginners and intermediates with a good mix of runs across the mountains. Valloire would also be well suited to families.
